Got a panel idea?
Here is a link to the track schedule from last year:

Come up with ideas, or raise your hand to say you will do a live show at the con!
Buffy Between the Lines (http://buffybetweenthelines.com/) is READY willing and pretty much able to do a live show at the con.

Cool,
And, I should also put you in touch with the WheatonVerse track director, unless you already are in touch. You might want to be on some of thier panels to talk about Buffy and such.
Thanks Derek! We did speak on some Whedontrack panels last year and were treated pretty badly (by the people who run the track), so AthenaMuze and I are probably going to stay off the Whedontrack.

Is there a possibility for a 'vodcast' in general / science or skepticism panel? I would also LOVE, if at all possible, to be an interviewer for any of the guests - even if it's just to answer one particular question and riff off that to make a 'montage' of responses in regards to the integration of science fiction and science.
dcolanduno
01-20-2008, 04:43 PM
Definitely,
If you look at the schedule from last year and the year before, we have always had at least one panel about Science in podcasting. The name of that panel has always been, 'PodSci', last year we had some cool people on that one. :)
A big topic at Podcasting and New Media Expo this year was turning fans into contributors. I'd be happy to put something like that together.

Wow,
What happened? It might help me at the director meetings. I am sure they might not realize they did anything bad...

We voiced our displeasure about the track to a couple people. And a lot of our listeners who attended voiced similar displeasures about how the track was run. It's a long, fairly involved story about how I and AthenaMuze were treated as people speaking on panels, if you want the full scoop I'd be happy to share it off-group. But I am fairly sure the directors knew and know exactly what they're doing when they did what they did.
Something that would be good for all the track directors to talk about I think is just how to handle people professionally. I heard a lot of complaints about how people were treated in large groups - lots of abusive ways of talking. I did hear of one track staff that did it right and made it fun, and kept people moving - without resorting to saying things like, "What are you guys a bunch of 5 year olds?" and "I can kick you out of this event if you don't cooperate.." and "shut up and sit down and don't make any noise."

Eeek!
Well, that is the good/bad part about Dragon*Con. Each director basically runs their own con, and does what they want. The only 'real' limitation we have is our schedule times, we get set time blocks we have to fill... other than that... anything goes for a director, and once in the seat, the track is theirs until they give it up. Some track directors are on the 'bad' side, some are quite amazing... so.... sounds like you ended up with someone on the bad side, but I will say that it can change from year to year, depending on how things are going for them personally. Last year, it was amazing that WE didn't have a ton more issues, but we held it together! :D

As previously mentioned, I'd be happy to join on with another Video Podcasting panel. I think it might also be interesting to do a panel with respect to podcasting in politics or podcasting in environmental issues, since both are big topics on my current project.
The idea of Greentime (http://www.weatherlight.com/greentime) doing a live video podcast is pretty compelling, but I'm not sure how we'd fit our theme into Dragon*Con. It's not really an environmentally-focused event.

I'd like to offer ideas for panels this year (more importantly, ones I'd like to participate in) ...
1. Green screen tips for video podcasting. We do a lot of green screen work for Dragon*ConTV, and we spend a lot of time on the setup.
2. WhatTheCast would love to do a live recording at Dragon*Con (assuming the panel time doesn't conflict with our staff duties).
3. Does a Dragon*ConTV panel belong in podcasting? I don't think of us as a "podcast" even though we're on iTunes and deliver content in the same way as a podcast (we just lack the regular schedule).

I noticed there were some people who wanted to start podcasts. I'm not suggesting we do a panel on it, but I can't remember if you guys had something there that we could give to people? Or point people to? That might be nice to have on the site so you could just say "hey if you guys want to start a podcast all the resources are on the podcasting track website."
dcolanduno

Brian,
I think D*C TV would be inside podcasting. We have had 'video' podcasting stuff on the track now since the beginnning. So, I say 'YES'. I think it would be a GREAT idea for you guys to do a panel, probably a presentation of your stuff and such. We did a LuLu TV panel like that last year. :)
And we can DEFINATELY put you down for that live show!
The Green Screen idea is a good one. I'll note it as well. Last year we only had a 'few' panels that weren't live shows. But, we might mix it up a bit more to make some room for new content. Especially now that Video Podcasting has become a major force. So, maybe it is a good idea to add in some cool tips and tricks and how to for Video Podcasters. :)
dcolanduno

Do you mean like a handout at the con? Or... possibly just a panel? I think we have done, at least, a Podcasting 101 panel on the first day for the past couple years. :)

Hello! I don't know if my director for the vodcast we're involved with will be attending, but I will be. I'm from The TANK Vodcast and if there is any 'space' on a panel for 'vodcasters in general', can I be added?
www.tankvodcast.wordpress.com - we're a skeptic vodcast that only just launched for 2008 yesterday, but the vodcast has been about for around 6 months prior and the podcast-version since 2001.
Essentially - what is the address to 'sign up' formally for such ventures?

Kylie,
Definitely, we will almost positively have a panel for video podcasting, we have had one each year since we started... (All two of them so far). :)
But, it has gained so much steam in the past year, we just can't ignore it. I would love to have at least one live talk show style video podcast happen on the track.
Maybe I should contact someone like the dudes from Cranky Geeks or something like that... if Richard doesn't make it! ;)

Two types of panels that I think would be of interest:
1 - How to do a podcast. When I was gearing up to start my show, I had no idea where or how to do it. What mikes are good and on the cheap, how to talk with others far from me and record the conversation, how to edit. Etc.
2 - Podcasts about writing. People like Tee and Mur would be great to listen to. Heck, I could be on the panel, but I doubt anyone would be interested in hearing me.
dcolanduno
02-07-2008, 05:19 PM
You will be in luck.
For the past few years we have had panels on all those topics, usually Mur, Tee, and JC Hutchins all are involved on them.
And we will probably have the 'how to podcast on a budget' type panel again, since that has been a favorite for some of the newer podcaster types in the past. :)
JustinMacumber
02-07-2008, 05:22 PM
Very cool. If anyone thinks I could contribute to a writing podcast panel, I'd be happy to do it.
As for Podcasting On A Budget, that is excellent. I'll be there. :D

Cool,
Make sure to check back often, I will be starting to put up the Alpha Schedule in the next day or two, and then you can raise your hand to be on any of the panels. We ALWAYS have at least one or two on Writing for audio or video podcasting. :)

I've thought about it, and if there is room on a panel, I'd love to be on it. I could either talk about what it is to do a writing-focused show, or what it's like as a new podcaster.
One of the topics I'm submitting to this year's New Media Expo is building a community and loyal fanbase around your podcast using free social media tools. Since my day job is Social Media Strategist it's fun to use some of those techniques.
JustinMacumber

I could see a panel like this heading in all sorts of fun areas. Since there are so many tools that people consider 'social media or networks'.

Do you have to do anything special to be on a panel? I've already stated that I like to be on one if it's about writing podcasts or new podcasters, but is expressing a desire enough? Who do I have to pay off? ;)
yes, you must sell your soul to Derek.

How about something along the lines of "Podcasting on a Budget: How to have a professional-sounding audio setup for less than $100?"
A lot of the "Podcasting 101" panels have people talking about $2000 mixing boards and the like, and I think it'd be great to talk about podcasting from a low-budget perspective.

Well,
I liked the idea of having a panel on just 'cheap' podcasting. Ways to make a good podcast, have it sound good, and NOT have to spend way too much money.
What you mention seems to fit into a panel like that, I'd think. :)
Chelly527
03-04-2008, 05:49 PM
I'd say we know how to do a podcast on the cheap. So yeah, we'd like to be a part of this panel discussion.
I know for sure I'll be at the convention this year. Still working on other members of our podcast. Why is it that me, the chick, is the biggest geek of the group?
dcolanduno
03-04-2008, 06:01 PM
Cause, I predict that in 10 years women will be the main geeks over time. I've been seeing it happen for the past 10 years at Dragon*Con. Every year, more and more women are all there to actually PARTICIPATE in the con, and the events. :)

You did? I see the one about podcasting your writing (podiobooks), and one about writing a podcast, but I don't see one about writers who podcast about their craft.
Kim and I would love to be on the panel on Podcasting on a Budget. We do an audio drama for basically cheap as free. And we'll be in the room already since our Live show is right before that.

I saw that one. I guess what I meant was a panel on podcasts that were ABOUT writing. You know, like what I do, what Mur does with "I Should Be Writing," or Matthew Wayne Selznick's "Writers Talking." We aren't talking about writing for a podcast, but a podcast about the craft of writing.

The big issue will be the internet connection situation. I'll have to see what the deal is this year, in 2005 we got a full T-1 to the podcasting room. But, it was WAYYYY expensive. I'll see if things have changed on that front.

Completely changing the subject, I would like to suggest that you have a track about promoting one's podcast. I know there is already a track about podcast promotion, but that is about using podcasting as a means to promote something else. I'd like to see a panel discuss ways of getting the word out about a podcast and making it easy to discover by potential listeners. A lot of this is very basic and could probably be covered by the 101 panel, but some strategies (like making episodes available as torrents) are not very widely known. I wrote a rough draft of an article for Podcaster Who's Who Magazine (which will probably never be published, since the site hasn't been updated in nearly a year) on the topic. I'm attaching it to this post to show that there is more than enough potential material for a panel on this subject.
I'd be willing to be on such a panel, but the reason I'm suggesting this as a topic is because I think it's important. I've seen so many great podcasts languish, simply because their producers didn't do enough to get the word out.

That panel for Promotion was originally meant to be what you are talking about. Maybe I need to re-form the description more than add a new panel?

Well, sure, if you want to do things the easy way. :D

I am all about the easy way when it comes to Dragon*Con.... especially knowing what hell ensues once the con starts! :o

I have pinged Tee repeatedly about this panel. He was very interested in coordinating the panelists this year. tvindy and/or Derek, you may also want to email him at tee at teemorris dot com.

I noticed you still have a few more slots you need to fill. My suggestion is a panel on voice actors. Many of the podcasters doing fiction or the sites like podiobooks or podhouses for short fiction have voice actors. This panel could have both authors and actors on it. Authors could talk about what they look for in voice talent, etc. Actors could talk about auditioning, working with the authors, etc.
Just my 2cents. :)

Btw...did I just coin a new term?? Podhouses!! I love it!

I second the suggestion of a voice actors' panel. This could go in a lot of interesting directions, depending on where the panelists wanted to take it:
Casting voices
Doing voices from famous TV and movie characters
Inventing appropriate character voices
Using software to modify an actor's voice
How to read character lines when podcasting a novel or short story
Using Skype to bring actors together for a scene

If the grand powers that be ever decide there should be a panel entitled "what NOT to do when podcasting," I can think of no better host for such a panel than yours truly! Topics could include what length to not make your show, what method you shouldn't use for recording it, how to improperly operate a mixer, how much time you should not spend editing, what blogging tools you shouldn't use, what feed creator software you should steer clear of, how not to promote oneself, and the best ways to not foster a community.
I give yo my utmost assurance that I am a WORLD CLASS premier expert in all of these fields and so much more! After all, what better way to learn than by negative example?

A great idea for a panel actually!
Let me see if I can squeeze it in.

I am bugging him to come again this year. He needs to convince the people at Wizzard to send him to the con again. Maybe we should start a letter writing drive to the Wizzard people so they realize that him being at Dragon*Con is good for them! :)

I'm late to get this idea up here - and it looks like the schedule's pretty full... but it's probably worth mentioning anyway, so here goes:
As a web admin for lots of sites, one of the most tedious - yet important - aspects of fan-based interaction seems to be Boards/Forums. There are lots of websites out there about "how to setup" the software, but the actual day-to-day running and the marketing of the community seems like a huge challenge that any web-based content provider could lose themselves in.
I thought it would be a great topic for seasoned admins to discuss with topics such as:
How to get folks to use your forums
Keeping off the spammers - what are your options?
How do you select a moderator? (Self-administration?)
How to manage your time so you don't spend it all on the forums.
Avatars? Cursing? Copyrighted Material?
When do I kick that member off the boards?
Is there any room for that kind of discourse on this track? It seems like a good fit to me since so much of podcasting is community driven...

I like this idea. There was a guy who lives here near us in Atlanta who did a lecture at TAM in Vegas when me and Swoopy were there this past week. It was much like this idea, he said he will be at Dragon*Con, I can maybe tap him to come and do that same lecture for this at D*C. :)

I also like that idea, but I would suggest broadening it to something like "How to Create a Community around your Podcast".

That is the heart of the matter, but I'd really like to see a lot of focus on the forums part... I'd warrant that most of us want lots of users but don't spend a lot of time looking at the underlying statistics of how many people stay on the boards, the time between posts, ratios between listeners and posters, etc... It's all good stuff to talk about, I'd just like to hear some experienced voices share their findings and approaches.

Personally I'd be somewhat interested in a 'building a podcast community' session where things like using forums, blog comments, twitter, etc. would be discussed. I wouldn't want it limited to just forums myself.
I also have some questions about this idea so I'm going to start a new thread about his. You can find it here...

I know it's a bit on the late side, but is there any chance we could do a live Brobdingnagian Minute? It's the podcast of the Brobdingnagian Bards.

Hey Marc,
Schedule items come under Derek's area of expertise so I'm sure once he sees your posting he'll be glad to let you know what's possible.

We have to get the final schedule into the con HQ by 10pm tonight!

Did that final schedule include panelists, moderators and co-staff? Last time I looked, there appeared to be many open slots, especially for moderators and co-staff. Speaking of, I am happy to fill in as needed for the latter two roles if you need.

The Google Spreadsheet is the one that we typically use to assign the moderators and staff. Double check that and see if your name is on some of the panels.
I haven't looked at the Podcasting one in a while to see if Swoopy has updated it yet. Maybe I'll look at that later today!

It does look like the panelist column has been fully filled out. I am only on the one panel I explicitly volunteered for and it doesn't look like there is any need for panelists anywhere on the schedule.
The moderator and co-staff columns are still only partly populated as of today. I imagine that will get filled in between now and then.

Ya,
In the next few days we are going to go through and assign all the staff stuff and such. This year we are going to try to make schedules for the staff so everyone knows when they should be in the room, etc... and we are going to attempt to get confirmation from everyone that they received their assignments, and understand and that they have no issues with them.
Since this year, between the two of us, we have TWO full tracks to run. We want to try to make things run a bit smoother and give us some time to get out of the track room for stuff like the bathroom and foods. :)

Sounds like a good plan, sir, especially generating individual staff schedules and getting confirmation from staffers.
Here, here to getting out of the track room. I love helping out and don't mind when there is no one else about but meals are nice and getting to see a bit of the rest of the con is even nicer. ;)
